Vicky Shares Her Winning Taste of Home Recipe.

  1. Check in  and tour Wayman's Corner Bed & Breakfast! 

  2. Do you like pork chops??  Once you eat the marinated chops at Winners Meat Shop you won’t want any others!  The chops, marinated in Winners own secret recipe sauce, are a favorite of NASCAR racer, Ryan Newman.  They’ll be your favorite too!! 

  3. Stop someone and ask them to take your picture with Annie Oakley whose bronze sculpture is the focus of the Annie Oakley Memorial Park, also located in Historic Downtown Greenville. 

  4. Visit Sweet Annie’s Cabin where you’ll find a delightful mix of Victorian to Country and kitchen to clothing.  Be prepared to be surprised and allow plenty of time to browse. 

  5. You'll "bearly" know which one to choose when you see the collection of Boyd's Bears at Expressions of Tyme. 

  6. Stop in at BK Photo for quality one hour film processing. Need a new camera, accessory, or binoculars? These professionals will be happy to offer advice! 

  7. Salads and sandwiches are simply scrumptious, but pizza is why I eat at Schumeth’s.  Although the original restaurant is only a memory, the grandson of Mike & Dottie Schumeth gives us a taste of why it was a favorite of Darke County locals.  Try Grandpa Mike’s pizza – it’s my favorite! 

  8. Take photos of Historic Downtown Greenville from the top of the courthouse steps. This is one of the largest rows of early 19th century commercial buildings still in use today and lists 85 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. 

  9. Stop in and say hello to Deannaat the Visitors Bureau located in The Palace. She'll be happy to give you a copy of the self-guided walking tour, Visitors Guide, & Darke County Calendar of Events.

  10. Visit the Greenville Public Library which was built in 1903. The reference room boasts a very large stained glass window depicting Shakespeare. A genealogy room is available.

  11. Visit Hannah's Garden Center. They have a great assortment of flowers and the advice is FREE!! Ask for Barry & tell him Vicky sent you. 

  12. Visit Eldora Speedway one of the country's leading dirt track racing facilities. It's now owned by Tony Stewart and is home to The World 100 and The Kings Royal Race. 

  13. Enjoy some cheese & crackers with your wine tasting at The Winery at Versailles or buy supplies to make your own!! 

  14. Tour Bear's Mill, an operating grist mill built in 1849. They offer mill flours, gourmet sundries & giftware and feature locally handmade pottery. 

  15. Act like you're a Greenville-ite native by driving thru the Maid Rite for a "regular" and a chocolate shake. Park by the Swinging Bridge, eat in your car, and then stroll across the bridge! Don't forget to leave your gum on the wall! 

  16. Birt’s General Store is a reminder of days gone by.  Their unique variety of stock includes such things as rakes, clocks, cereal, toys, honey, sorghum, cheese, milk, clothing, and candy.  Actually, 506 different types of candy.  That’s right – 506!!!

    Although, they only stock 250 kinds in the summer – only?!!  In season, you’ll find strawberries, cherries, apricots, peaches and apples.  During one 3 ½ week period, they sold 6,500 bushels of peaches.  This General Store does things in a big way!! 

  17. Visit the Garst Museum where you will find Annie Oakley and Lowell Thomas memorabilia. See an early Indy 500 race car that was built in Greenville. Genealogy research is a hot item at Garst. 

  18. Attend an auction to find great antique treasures. There is at least one scheduled almost every weekend.  Or visit any of the shops on our antique alley.  This brochure is available at the Darke County Visitors Bureau.

  19. Golf on one of the 3 public golf courses. 

  20. Enjoy miniature golf and a driving range at Caddy Shack's. 

  21. See the monument that marks the approximate place where General Anthony Wayne signed the famous Treaty of Greene Ville. 

  22. Visit The Great Darke County Fair claimed to be the largest county fair in the world! Opens the third Friday of August and runs for nine days. 

  23. Attend The Artist Series, The Family Theatre Series or other Special Events presented by The Darke County Center for the Arts at the St. Clair Memorial Hall. For more info visit their website www.centerforarts.net or Call 937-547-0908. 

  24. Take a sugar cookie break at WCB&B. This recipe, along with several others is available from Vicky's Guest Recipe Box. 

  25. Attend the Rolling 50's Classic Car Show on the streets of Downtown Greenville in Sept. Be sure to wear your penny loafers and poodle skirt!! 

  26. Have a piece of the greatest fried chicken in town along with homemade French fries from The Chicken Kitchen II. (Carry out only) 

  27. Brumbaugh Fruit Farm offers September & October weekend events which include a hayride, petting farm, and the Kinda Kooky Korn Maze. 

  28. Need a break? You’ll love the atmosphere & comfy seating at Broadway Joe’s Coffeehouse where you’ll be surprised to find a huge collection of – tea!  You can try new flavors by the cup before choosing from their assortments of Republic of Tea.  And, yes, they do sell specialty coffee drinks! 

  29. See the Water Street Cemetery stones which recognize seven veterans of the War of 1812 and two veterans of the Civil War. 

  30. Mmmmm – chocolate!  And, it’s almost too pretty to eat – Almost!  Ghyslain Chocolatier, located in nearby Union City, specializes in European Chocolate and Pastries.  Their chocolates are shipped around the world and you’ll see why when you tour the production center.  Learn the delicate process of how Ghyslain’s chocolates are made and sample the difference between fine gourmet chocolate and standard chocolate.  Will you be able to tell the difference?  Call 866-449-7524 for more information on the tours available. 

  31. Enjoy the enticing aroma as you make your selection from Winan's Chocolates & Coffees. By the piece or by the pound,  I can't stop with just one!! 

  32. McMaster & Storm is a shop with vintage mercantile charm featuring vintage & new home décor!  You’ll find European soaps, ribbons, gifts and signature gift wrapping.  The smell of soaps in the shop is delightful! 

  33. Take a walk at one of the parks-Coppess Nature Sanctuary, Worth Family Nature Preserve, Routzong Preserve and the Shawnee Prairie Preserve, also home of the Darke County Nature Center. You will also enjoy the Alice Bish Walkway & The Tecumseh Walkway. 

  34. Walking down the midway at the Great Darke County Fair, you can smell the waffle cones baking at Farmer Brown’s stand.  Now you can enjoy this treat anytime since Farmer Brown built a local restaurant!  If you like a Great Steak, you’ll love a Farmer Brown sandwich.  But be sure to save room for a waffle ice-cream cone! 

  35. A popular stop in Greenville is The KitchenAid Experience.   Mixers, blenders, toasters, coffee pots, and more are on display in an array of colors. A "must-see" for cooks of any skill!!  Visit their website at www.KitchenAid.com/Experience for information on classes and free cooking demonstrations.

  36. Call ahead for a massage in The Rooftop Retreat at WCB&B. 

  37. The World's Longest Yard Sale now extends into Ohio!  Plan your shopping excursion along Rt. 127 and allow time to visit Greenville for an overnight stay.  This event takes place every August.

  38. Spend time at the Annie Oakley Festival held the last full weekend in July. Choose from golf tournaments, Miss Annie Oakley shooting contest, a muzzleloaders re-enactment camp, collectibles & antique market, huge downtown sidewalk sales, a bus trip to Annie's grave site and more. 

  39. Attend a concert presented by The Municipal City Band on summer Sunday evenings at the band shell in the city park. 

  40. In town during the Halloween or Christmas season?? Be sure to look for the rooftop display at the home of Roy & Sharon Harrison located across the street from WCB&B. 

  41. How long has it been since your order was delivered by a carhop? You'll think you're back in the 60's when you eat at Jim's Drive-In, home of the Spanish Hot Dog. 

  42. Horseshoe pitching tournaments are held in July & September in the Greenville City Park. 

  43. Play tennis, shuffleboard, or throw some shoes on the courts in the Greenville City Park. 

  44. You’ll recognize Buffalo Jack’s Restaurant, located in nearby Covington,  by the 1000 pound, life-like, bronze buffalo out front!  Inside you’ll find a variety of wild game taxidermy including 2 buffalo head mounts and two buffalo full mounts.  The menu offers buffalo, alligator, elk, rattlesnake, and venison.  Not feeling adventurous??  I usually order All You Can Eat Walleye – the best I’ve ever had!  They also serve steaks, ribs, cod, catfish, and shrimp as well as sandwiches, fries, and stuffed mushrooms – another of my favorites!

  45. It's not hard liquor,  just the best apple cider you'll ever taste! Downing Fruit Farm has been in the apple business since 1838. Their festival is held the first weekend in October. 

  46. Take a bike ride through our quiet residential streets, along our bike trail,  or out into the surrounding countryside. 

  47. A family tavern?? Yes, that's how I describe Red & Ruth's Tavern. Our family has celebrated many occasions by feasting on pizza , our favorite menu item. 

  48. Swim at Wayne Lakes Little Beach. Swimmers will enjoy a spring fed, chemical free lake and a landscaped, sandy beach. 

  49. Fish at the Greenville City Park.  No license required!!

  50. Do the “Broadway Boogie” as you check out these businesses:  Southwest Traders; Ann’s Gifts and Antiques;  Granny’s Corner; Hugs & Kisses (children’s clothing);Bach to Rock; Morgan’s Bridal & Tuxedo; Pamela’s Intimates; Bread of Life Christian Bookstore; Montage; Youniques; Life Styles Interior Design Studio; Hallmark; Grote Photography; Bernina on Broadway; and Jennifer’s Bridal & Formal store.

  51. Enjoy the playground at the Greenville City Park. While you're there, be sure to see the peacocks and swim in the pool. 

  52. The Purple Pansy has roses for your someone special. If they're REALLY special, visit Wieland's Jewelers. 

  53. During the summer months, you’re in for a real treat!  Located in the parking lot near Bob Evan’s restaurant, you’ll find a long flat wagon loaded with corn, melons, green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, and lots more.  The produce is picked early in the morning and the wagon is usually there by 11:00 AM Monday through Saturday.  You’ll be charmed by the Old Order family that runs this stand! 

  54. Attend the church of your choice.  There are more than 100 churches in Darke County.

  55. Held in June, Versailles Poultry Days offers rides, games, a parade, community theater and great barbecued chicken. 

  56. Attend the Steam Threshers Reunion or the Farm Power of the Past in July to see how early farmers got the job done! 

  57. Book a room at WCB&B for your next visit. And when you return home, tell all your friends & family about "THINGS TO DO IN DARKE COUNTY!!"
